How to Become a Radiologic Technologist (X-Ray Tech): Career Guide

The person who takes your X-rays after you break a bone is called a radiologic technologist. They help your doctor see what is going on inside your body. And they do it with skill and care. All you have to do is sit or lie in the right spot, and they will guide you into position. Then they use imaging machines to capture clear pictures under your skin.

What Radiologic Technologists Actually Do

Radiologic technologists are also known as rad techs or X-ray techs. They are the ones who manage the technical work behind medical imaging. They can work with patients of all ages. Their goal is very simple: to obtain images of bones, organs, and tissues that doctors can read with confidence. Their job includes:

The main education requirement is an associate degree in radiologic technology. These programs typically take about 2 years to complete. Some schools also offer certificate programs that take less time but may limit your career options.

Many states also require a license to practice. For this reason, you need to check your state’s rules before starting your career journey. You’ll also need to complete continuing education to keep your certification active. And that is usually 24 credits every two years. This helps you stay current as technology changes.

Job Outlook and Pay

The good news is that the demand for rad techs is rising. The field should grow by about five percent through 2034. This data is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A big reason for this is the aging population, because older adults often need more scans and more care.

Pay also varies by work setting, skill level, and specialty. You will usually start lower if you are new to the field. And then your pay climbs as you gain time on the job. Extra certifications can also move you up.
