Primary Role

Act as the group EHS Lead for the Lexington Site, which includes manufacturing, warehouse, and PDTS/RNCD laboratories in Lexington, Cambridge, North Reading and Belmont MA. The Lead will be responsible for managing, mentoring and supervising several of the EHS staff with building ownership. The Lead will work to integrate the EHS function into the Lean manufacturing process and continue the implementation of a robust EHS management system.

In addition, the Lead will direct the development of comprehensive and sustainable environment, health and safety (EHS) programs for Lexington site. They will be required to implement a comprehensive strategy to ensure compliance with ISO14001 and OHSAS 45001 standards and applicable federal, state and local EH&S regulatory requirements.

The Lead will function as the backup to the Head of EHS as a member of the site s leadership team, working closely with peers to build a culture of EHS excellence at the site. Direct and support the work of the EHS professionals at the site and develop a high performing team culture for the Site EHS department.

Essential Functions

  • Direct the development of strong environmental, health and safety programs in alignment with legal, regulatory, corporate requirements and industry best practice.
  • Implement a process to ensure programs are sustainable to support business growth via management of periodic inspections/program audits, permit reviews, and management of change.
  • Manage and oversee the occupational health program on-site, including case management and interfacing with appropriate Site/Global functions.
  • Manage internal audit response and corrective action closure performance.
  • Ensure continual improvement through implementation of the Takeda EHS management system, including facilitating risk assessments, setting targets and monitoring performance.
  • Lead and direct members of the EHS team at the Site and oversee/direct the work of contract Occupational Health and H&S Consultants.
  • Develop a strong safety culture across the Site, ensuring all incidents are reported, investigated and corrective actions implemented as appropriate.
  • Working with site management, ensure continual improvement in EHS performance.
  • Through communication and leadership within Massachusetts develop a strong safety culture by implementing Site Leadership safety tours, enhancing safety teams, and driving accountability for corrective actions.
  • Support new equipment installations and facility construction projects. Ensure effective EHS reviews are conducted for equipment, process and operations updates, modifications, and/or additions.
  • Ensure appropriate effective H&S training is developed and delivered to all personal as required by regulations and by Takeda standards and procedures.
  • Ensure applicable EHS inspections required in each of the Site s buildings are performed. Document and report findings and oversee implementation of corrective actions. Identify and communicate trends.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures. Ensure fire drills are conducted and evaluated and fire life safety equipment and systems are maintained. Coordinate inspections by local fire departments.
  • Monitor and measure key EHS performance indicators and communicate performance to the LDI meetings, as appropriate.
  • Participate in internal and third-party EHS audits and inspections.

Education & Experience Requirements

Essential: 12+ years experience in EHS related field.

BS/BA required in technical discipline - Engineering, safety, environmental studies, life science or similar field.

Must be knowledgeable in US EPA, OSHA and DOT regulations, must be experienced with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 management systems. Experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing or other high hazard industry (oil & gas, pulp & paper, chemical manufacturing, steel, etc)

Desired: Professional certification in the EHS field (CHMM, CSP, CIH, or equivalent) preferred. Experience with LEAN, Six sigma methodology preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Position is located in Lexington, MA and is part of the site leadership team.
  • Travel to satellite locations required (Belmont, N. Reading, Alewife)
  • Travel to Corporate EHS meetings and conferences to represent the Lexington site.
  • Travel to network sites upon request for best-practice sharing, audits, etc.
  • Develop and implement strategic site and network initiatives to transition EHS from a reactive function to a pro-active risk based function
