As an Associate Director /Director of Immunology Cell Therapy working in the Gastroenterology Drug Discovery Unit team, you will be empowered to work cross-functionally with Takeda s Cell Therapy Engine and Immunology team to contribute towards GI drug pipeline:


Is a scientific leader in the area of liver disease and fibrosis research. Leads discovery aspects of liver disease research projects (internal and external partnered projects) from target ID through to IND leveraging external innovation and partnerships.


  • A scientific researcher and project leader within the Gastroenterology Drug Discovery Unit, working within a highly matrixed and externally focused environment to build a strong and sustainable preclinical and early clinical liver disease pipeline
  • Collaborates with other Takeda research teams and external partners to build a robust pipeline for liver fibrosis up to and including clinical POC, with a focus on external innovation.
  • Works closely with immunology discovery colleagues to identify and create synergies between immunology and liver disease research teams in areas of common interest such as inflammation
  • Partners with colleagues in Translational Research and Early Clinical (TREC) team to define early development plans thru POC for all internal and external projects in the liver disease portfolio
  • Is a subject matter expert on diligence teams in partnership with Center for External Innovation for the identification and assessment of external platform and pipeline opportunities in liver disease research
  • Identifies opportunities for collaborations with key academic groups, CROs, biotech companies for target ID and to enhance project progression and decision making
  • Is seen as a fibrosis matter expert and is up-to-date with state of the art scientific advances and the competitive environment in liver diseases and fibrosis
  • Represents Takeda and is responsible for creating a presence in the global liver and related scientific community through scientific meetings, advisory boards, online research communities, etc.


  • Has an advanced degree in health or life sciences (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M.) with significant drug discovery experience in liver diseases including project leadership, or the equivalent from an academic setting
  • Is highly knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of liver disease research
  • Track record of contributing to progression of liver programs ranging from target discovery to clinical proof-of-concept in an industry setting
  • Demonstrated creativity in scientific approaches and questions addressed
  • Experience in managing teams in a matrix environment
  • Experience in building and supporting partnerships with academic institutions and/or companies


  • The position is based in Cambridge, MA.
  • Requires approximately 15-20% or more travel, including international travel.
