Medical Science Liaison Team Lead a.k.a. Player-Coach: West Region
Serving as a field-based extension of Medical Affairs, the Medical Science Liaison Team Lead (MSL-TL) will represent the Company and its surgical product portfolio by developing long-term relationships with critical stakeholders, including but not limited to healthcare professionals (General, Reconstructive, Abdominal Surgeons) in addition to key healthcare decisions makers, key opinion leaders, clinicians, academic institutions, and managed care organizations. The MSL-TL will address the specific needs of these groups by engaging in discussions on the Companyu2019s product/s for post-surgical pain, in addition to future pipeline products, that are timely, fair-balanced, and objective.
In addition to field-facing responsibilties, and in conjunction with the Senior Director, Field Medical (TMAC) and the Company's management team, the MSL-TL acting as a player-coach and is responsible for mentoring and coaching the MSL team and assisting in the development and oversight of MSL field activities. The MSL-TL is also responsible for ensuring the MSL team attains their stated goals and objectives and providing activity updates to the management team as requested. The MSL-TL will work closely with the internal management to develop and execute both individual and team business plans designed to meet shared business objectives. MSL-TLs will provide input to management regarding market dynamics as they pertain to the Company's products, business development (i.e., opportunities and risks, competitive intelligence), and customer feedback.
The Medical Science Liaison Team is the front-line of the Medical Affairs organization responsible for establishing and maintaining educational and research collaborations with a primary responsibility of engaging in the exchange of published scientific data and other medical and/or scientific information with external customers (Health Care Providers, researchers, professional organization leadership, and formulary decision-makers). The MSL team will initially focus on the Companyu2019s pipeline product, a late-stage, surgically implantable product in development to provide sustained postsurgical pain relief.
The MSL team will deliver clinical, scientific, and technical education, building long term peer to peer relationships with key stakeholders by establishing rapport and providing scientific education to key surgical and O.R. healthcare practitioners. In addition to leadership accountabilities, the MSL-TL is responsible for developing, coordinating and assuring implementation of corporate, scientific, and clinical strategies to these thought leaders within academic, clinical, and healthcare organizations. These scientific exchanges will support and/or expand current concepts, as well as ensure the safe and effective utilization of the Company's product(s).
As a Player-Coach:
- Mentor and coach BioSurgical Pain Management MSL team
- Assist MSLs in development of business plans and ensure execution and alignment with clientu2019s priorities
- Execute regular teleconference consultations and field visits with MSLs to coach, mentor, and ensure compliance
- Assess and identify training gaps for individual MSLs and for MSL team
- Execute training activities as directed including but not limited to new hire orientation, activity tracking system, scientific/therapeutic subject matter, and compliance policies.
- Evaluate and develop of professional competencies and skills of MSLs
- Ensure MSL performance and compliance through regular review of expense and activity reports.
- Assist in development and refinement of activity reports
- Provide routine updates and reports to Senior Director, Field Medical (TMAC) and the Company's management.
In the Field:
- Act as the Companyu2019s primary clinical/scientific resource to Health Care Providers (HCPs) in his/her assigned geography for information pertaining to disease state and the Company's product(s) to ensure awareness and understanding
- Serve as a conduit for accurate and updated clinical, scientific and medical information between Thought Leaders (TLs)/investigators and the Companyu2019s Medical Affairs group
- Establish, foster, cultivate and maintain peer-to-peer relationships with TLs in the therapeutic areas in which the Company has current and future interests
- Share knowledge and participate in scientific exchanges and interactions with TLs and HCPs
- Present clinical and scientific data on the Company's product(s) and relevant therapeutic areas to formulary decision-makers, as requested
- Identify and communicate key clinical and research issues from industry leaders to appropriate internal partners to shape Company research, development, and commercial strategie
- Develop and implement business plans to support Medical Affairs strategic direction for assigned geography;
- Maintain and demonstrate a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of disease state, clinical information, and product data
- Demonstrate full knowledge of and ability to execute on approved medical platforms and MSL initiatives;
- Serve as technical/scientific subject matter resource to Company
- commercial personnel
- Facilitate submitted Investigator-Initiated Study (IIS) proposals and assist with Company-sponsored studies, as requested
- Serve as primary contact for external investigators who submit IIS proposals
- Provide clinical/scientific expertise to investigators involved in collaborative post-approval studies; and
- Work in conjunction with appropriate internal colleagues to support Company collaboration and interaction with professional/scientific organizations.

- An undergraduate degree in the medical sciences, biology, pharmacy, nursing or a related field is required. An advanced degree, such as MD, PharmD or PhD in medical sciences is strongly preferred
- 2-3 years of supervisory or leadership experience is required to be considered
- A minimum of 3 years of experience as a clinical/medical science liaison in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries with an emphasis on hospital-based applications
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a scientific or clinical setting. A history of Operating Room/surgical experience is strongly preferred
- Knowledge of the pharmaceutical/healthcare market, acceptable practices, and related regulations is required;
- Knowledge of hospital/surgical center protocol and process is required
- Knowledge of hospital formulary practices and decision-making processes is preferred
- Advanced understanding of clinical/medical science is required
- Knowledge of product-related therapeutic area clinical application is strongly preferred
- Ability to integrate and work in cross functional network
- Demonstrated project management ability
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Capable of engaging in frequent business travel (approximately 60 u2013 80 percent of time), including the ability to travel overnight and occasionally on weekends
- Capable of extended periods of car travel.
