A subject matter expert on publication best practices and development of scientific publication strategy, the Director, Global Publication Excellence plays a strategic leadership position and drives critical operational aspects of the Global Publication group and ensures alignment across the various geographies: Global, regional and the various Therapeutic Areas. The Director leads a team of employees and contractors and provide operational support for the planning and tactical execution of medical plans within the Global Publication department.

The Director is expected to take a strategic leadership position and drive critical operational aspects of the Publication group, including key initiatives such as vendor selection, process update, metrics and system improvement. Additionally, the Director is responsible for managing the initial activities within the R&D organization publication-related activities.

Critical to this position is the understanding of good publication practices (including, but not limited to ICMJE, GPP3, CONSORT, etc) and of ethical considerations around industry publications, the ability to implement, interpret, and apply policy to daily activities, the ability to assess vendor capabilities within the scope of work. Strong leadership skills and superb communication skills are required for training internal teams on good publication practices and managing interactions with internal stakeholders, and vendors.


  • Part of the Publication Leadership Team.
  • As a subject matter expert on publication, provide strategic leadership to the execution of global publication strategies and deliverables
  • Monitor high standards and consistency in quality and internal controls that are applicable to publication activities; and develop and operationalize SOPs for streamlined execution across Takeda
  • Serve as a strategic partner for the US and Japan Publication teams, EUCAN and GEM evidence generation and medical communication partners, as well as various Global R&D groups.
  • Provides training to teams and therapeutic area stakeholders on best publication practices and publication-related issues, as needed
  • Serve as point person for early-phase programs
  • Play a key role in developing, tracking, and reporting publications metrics
  • In collaboration with others Publication Directors, determine resource needs; recruit vendors and personnel to fill resource gaps; manage performance of direct reports and contribute to recruiting, training, and coaching of high-performing individuals; creates an atmosphere for learning and professional development consistent with the tenets of Takeda-ism
  • Collaborates with other Publications Directors to identify development opportunities and forums for professional growth for themselves and their direct reports


Education: A higher education degree (M.D., Pharm.D., Ph.D.) is preferred; Master s degree in biomedical discipline or equivalent with experience in publication management is considered.

  • 10+ years in the medical communications or biopharmaceutical industry, biopharmaceutical industry, preferably within a matrix structure.
  • 7+ years experience in Medical Affairs or Clinical Development (e.g. Clinical Scientist, Medical Information, Medical Communications, Publications, Post-Doctoral medical communications residency or fellowship)
  • Experience and knowledge of communication strategies, and data presentation for various scientific and medical audiences
  • Knowledge of scientific publication planning approaches and ability to apply relevant external guidelines related to publications are required
  • Significant previous experience in managing/leading cross-function and global teams
  • Significant vendor management experience and experience with publication-support systems
