ProClinical is seeking to fill the permanent position of Scientist I – Analytical Development for our client, a clinical-stage vaccine company based in Rockville, MD. The ideal candidate will be a motivated, energetic, and detail-oriented individual to work within the Characterization group to provide analytical characterization and comparability assessment of complex adjuvants and protein antigens used in vaccine drug products.  Understanding principals and practical applications of mass spectrometry and biophysical methods for protein characterization is required, as well as a background in HPLC, mass spectrometry, AUC, DLS, SPR, UV/Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy.  Knowledge of glycobiology and experience with carbohydrate analysis is a plus.

Strong assay development, experimental design, and troubleshooting skills are musts, along with the ability to work on multiple projects and to clearly communicate results.  The ideal candidate will make detailed observations, analyze data, interpret results, and exercise appropriate technical judgment in the design, execution, and interpretation of experimental data.  The candidate will receive guidance from a supervisor for routine work and new assignments.


  • Perform analytical testing of protein antigens using LC-MS and spectroscopic methods to establish purity/impurity profile.
  • Characterize complex adjuvants and protein antigens using new cutting-edge LC-MS and biophysical technologies.
  • Perform analytical testing as part of characterization and comparability studies to support regulatory requirements.
  • Author/ co-author and review reports and SOPs.
  • Support Discovery testing needs for the projects in the pipeline.
  • Perform method qualification, and method transfer to other departments (e.g., QC)
  • Thoroughly analyze results and methods, solve analytical problems, and troubleshoot assays.
  • Prepare scientific journal publications and presentations.
  • Present scientific findings at internal meetings and external conferences.


  • Ph.D. with 0-3 years of industrial experience or Master’s degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and/or vaccine development.
  • A thorough understanding of protein chemistry, protein post-translational modifications, protein-ligand binding, protein-protein interactions, and methods used for higher order structure analysis.
  • Strong understanding of mass spectrometric, electrophoretic, and chromatographic techniques in protein and carbohydrate characterization.
  • Ability to critically analyze data, communicate results, and author technical reports.
  • Excellent record keeping abilities, to document analytical data generated in support of regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional groups.
