JOB PURPOSE & IMPACT
Entry level laboratory position providing support to technical staff and Cartesian physicians. Primary responsibilities include initial intake and registration of patient specimens, handling of patient specimens, data entry and QA of patient information, slide making and sample storage.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, and transportation and storage of specimens.
May be required to assist in the performance of quality control procedures.
Document all quality control activities.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
May be required to prepare and store reagents. Fill tubes and bottles with specified solutions and apply identification labels.
May be required to transcribe results that have been previously recorded, either manually by a physician or licensed personnel, or automatically by a testing instrument.
Follow established laboratory procedures for the use of mechanical or electronic instruments used for the processing of specimens.
Be capable of identifying problems related to specimen processing and immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, or director.
Open shipping packages containing human medical specimens.
Accurate transcription of handwritten and printed documentation.
Accurate data entry using computer keyboard and mouse of patient and test information into the applicable laboratory information system (LIS).
Quality assurance of data entry.
Prepare smears of blood and bone marrow on glass microscope slides.
Aliquot samples as needed for testing.
Isolate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from blood or bone marrow aspirate specimens.
Analyze blood and bone marrow samples using hematology analyzer.
File and retrieve microscope slides using the slide storage system.
Scan documentation into computer document management system.
Safely dispose of old specimens including blood and bone marrow according to established process.
Responsible for proper documentation when completing QA logs, instrument PM records, and other required laboratory forms.
Assist with Lab QA metrics and reporting.
Maintain cleanliness of laboratory and restock with supplies.
Prepare and label specimens to be placed in temperature-specific storage (for refrigeration, freezing, or cryopreservation).
Deliver supplies and laboratory specimens to designated work areas.
May assist in preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment, including centrifuges, hematology analyzers, copiers, printers, etc.
Complete relevant information on send-out referral lab forms.
Assist in sample logging, archiving, storage and/or shipping as assigned.
Follow established sample tracking procedures for all incoming and outgoing samples.
May participate in training of new employees as assigned.
Ability to process and prioritize relevant tasks efficiently.
Additional responsibilities to include specialization in specific functional areas requiring impeccable accuracy and detail as needed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS

Education: Bachelor's degree in technology science or health-related field from an accredited institution required.
Years of Experience Required: Minimum of one (1) year relevant laboratory working experience (preferred).
Education: Associate s degree in technology science or health-related field.
Years of Experience Required: Minimum of two (2) years relevant laboratory working experience required.
Excellent communication skills necessary to deal effectively with co-workers and all levels of laboratory staff.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and over the telephone.
A willingness to work in a fast paced, high volume environment.
Able to perform basic math functions and accurate data entry.
Demonstrated excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
Impeccable attention to detail.
Highly motivated self-starter.

The work environment involves moderate exposure to unusual elements including: extreme temperatures, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and includes the use of protective equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Interaction with laboratory equipment, samples, supplies, and laboratory personnel may be required whereby appropriate precautions are to be taken per the Company s Safety and Injury, Illness and Prevention Plans.
