JOB PURPOSE & IMPACT
Entry level laboratory position providing support to the Accessioning and Specimen Archiving departments. Primary responsibilities include checking patient specimens into the archival storage system, organization and maintenance of slide storage room, archive records maintenance, and fulfilling specimen returns and check-out requests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, shipping, archiving and storage of specimens.
May be required to assist with and document quality control activities.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
May be required to prepare and store reagents. Fill tubes and bottles with specified solutions and apply identification labels.
Be capable of identifying problems related to lab equipment or specimen processing and immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, or director.
Accurate transcription of handwritten and printed documentation.
Accurate data entry using computer keyboard and mouse of patient and sample information into the applicable laboratory information system (LIS).
File and retrieve microscope slides using the slide storage system.
Scan documentation into computer document management system.
Safely dispose of expired specimens including blood and bone marrow according to established process.
Responsible for proper documentation when completing QA logs, instrument PM records, and other required laboratory forms.
Maintain cleanliness of laboratory and restock with supplies.
Prepare and label specimens to be placed in temperature-specific storage (for refrigeration, freezing, or cryopreservation).
Deliver supplies and laboratory specimens to designated work areas.
Follow established sample tracking procedures for all incoming and outgoing samples.
Collect and dispose of biohazard waste according to safety protocols.
May participate in training of new employees as assigned.
Ability to process and prioritize relevant tasks efficiently.

Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Bachelor's degree in technology science or health-related field from an accredited institution is a plus.
Years of Experience Required: Minimum of one (1) year laboratory working experience preferred.
Excellent communication skills necessary to deal effectively with co-workers and all levels of laboratory staff.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and over the telephone.
A willingness to work in a fast paced, high volume environment.
Able to perform basic math functions and accurate data entry.
Demonstrated excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
Impeccable attention to detail.
Highly motivated self-starter.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to laboratory instruments.
The work environment involves moderate exposure to unusual elements including: extreme temperatures, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and includes the use of protective equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Interaction with laboratory equipment, samples, supplies, and laboratory personnel may be required whereby appropriate precautions are to be taken per the Company s Safety and Injury, Illness and Prevention Plans.
