Dos and don'ts of
corporate holiday gift giving
December 12, 2002
Holiday gift giving is meant to show appreciation-whether
it is for one's employee, a superior or a client. But even well-meaning
givers find that giving gifts that are too extravagant or giving
to people who according to company policy are not supposed to receive
them can backfire-even damaging valuable business relationships.
MedZilla probes into the etiquette of corporate gift giving, helping
to identify the sometimes unwritten dos and don'ts during the holidays.
Resume searches: Don't
forget the human touch
December 4, 2002
Applicant tracking systems seem the solution for plucking
the "right" resumes from the bunch. But there's a problem
with relying too heavily on technology, HR experts say. Medzilla looks
at computerized resume ranking systems--their benefits and limitations--and,
in this article, helps HR people to find the right balance between
technology and manual resume reviews.
Busted or not? What really
happens when your employer sees your resume on the Web?
November 26, 2002
Medzilla.com conducted an industry survey asking nearly
250 employers and recruiters they would react to finding an employee's
resumes on a job board. Surprisingly, the results indicated that over
98% of all direct employers either said their employees are free to
look around or that they would try to evaluate the current work situation
and correct it. Less than 2% of all direct employers indicted immediate
or eventual termination would be the consequence.
Relocation Fear and Loathing?
Sell your home in 5 days and laugh all the way to your next job!
November 19, 2002
Having to sell can be stressful when relocating for a job.
An alternative sales approach eliminates the sales commission that
Realtors charge, allows sellers to set the date of sale, and is a
fair process in which sellers usually get fair market value for their
home. This Medzilla article features the step-by-step approach to
this method, which is in the book How to Sell Your Home in Five Days.

How do the best headhunters use Internet technology today?
Medzilla goes to the experts to define the often-stormy relationship
between top headhunters and Internet technology. You'll see in the
article that in the end, technology is OK, but it's human interaction
that is important to the success of a headhunter.

versus Functional?
November 5, 2002
According to human resources expert Dr. Frank Heasley and
best-selling HR author Richard H. Beatty the reverse chronological
resume is the preferred resume format among HR professionals and recruiters.
This article explains some of the pros and cons of each format and
describes who may, or may not; want to use each resume type.
Selecting and Working
With the Right Search Firms: Things You Need to Know
October 29, 2002

there are dos and don'ts and it takes work to get the most out of
the union. MedZilla explores those dos and don'ts that job seekers
need to know before embarking on a job search with recruiters.
Combating workplace negativity
October 22, 2002
Workplace negativity can cripple the best organizations.
Chances are that even in relatively upbeat workplaces there are some
negativists. Managers need to realize, that left un-addressed, negativity
can become an epidemic. To discourage negativity, open the lines of
communication, reward positivity, help employees to feel they fit
in, and maintain a good mix of personality types in your organization.
Lead by example, with a strong, positive attitude. Try to hire as
few negative people as possible. Although it can be difficult to tell
who is negative and who is not during a short interview, some strategic
questions and a clear understanding of your own feelings will help
you avoid the very few people who are inherently negative.

Interviews: Do
they predict job performance?
October 8, 2002
Employers who rely too heavily on the interview process
often find that it is a poor predictor of job performance. In this
article, MedZilla looks at what place the interview has in the hiring
process and why it's important to combine the interview with other
elements to make better hiring decisions.

The
Revolution in HR Recruiting Technology
September 26, 2002
Digital technologies are powering a revolution in Human
Resources and recruiting. This is particularly apparent in the pharmaceutical,
biotech and healthcare, fields where HR departments are under increasing
pressure to find talented scientists, nurses, pharmacists, regulatory
professionals, and others who are in short supply. But while technology
can be a powerful ally, it can also be an attractive nuisance. Massive
amounts of information are simply meaningless data unless intelligently
managed. Although technology can assist in making better decisions,
it's easy to lose the human element that is necessary in making good
decisions. In this article, leading recruitment and technology experts
discuss the appropriate applications of human resource technology,
and the requirements for personal interaction and interpretation.

The nursing shortage is rampant, yet males, which make
up about half the population, remain sorely untapped in nursing. Medzilla

action should fix the problem. Luther Christman, PhD, RN, the first
male dean of a nursing school in the U.S., goes into why he thinks
the policy that has changed so many other male-dominated professions
hasn't taken hold in nursing.

Asks: "Why Are There So Few Male Nurses?"
June 11, 2002
Author and Pulitzer Prize winner Susan Faludi wrote in
her book Stiffed about men being at the mercy of cultural forces that
disfigure their lives and destroy their happiness. Enter men in nursing,
where men are but a small fraction-5.7% according to the latest statistics-of
a female-run workforce, and little seems to be changing. "Men
are not encouraged to go into nursing, and, for the most part, the
male population is overlooked by the profession," says Frank
Heasley, PhD, president and CEO, MedZilla, a leading Internet recruitment
and professional community that targets jobseekers and HR Professionals
in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and science.

salary, Heasley says.

Recruiting Strategies that Work - and Others That Don't!
May 14, 2002
A recent survey by a professional recruitment society found
that many hospitals continue to use strategies that they say don't
work well in the recruitment of nurses and fail to use to their full
potential those strategies that they say do work. The survey, done
by the National Association for Health Care Recruitment (NAHCR) in
December 2001, asked 720 member hospitals to identify strategies they're
using to recruit and retain nurses and how effective they are. Two-hundred-sixty-five
hospitals responded.
Successful
nurse recruiting more than just recruiting
May 7, 2002
The traditional way of recruiting nurses is a zero-sum
game in today's market, says Joe Bannon, recruitment solutions product
manager, Atlanta Journal and Constitution. "There are not enough
nurses to go around and the nurses that you recruit today, your competition
will recruit from you tomorrow. In a zero-sum game nobody wins. You
end up spending energy that should be focused elsewhere," says
Bannon who will be speaking on innovative programs that are helping
with the nursing shortage at the July 2002 National Association for
Health Care Recruitment annual meeting in Marco Island, Fla.
Men:
A solution to the nursing shortage
April 30, 2002
In his 25 years as a nurse, Graham McDougall, Jr., PhD,
RN, remembers only one advertising campaign for nurses aimed at men.
"I remember one of the posters
It was a young kid being
examined by a male nurse and it said something like 'When I grow up
I want to be a nurse just like my dad,'" Dr. McDougall said.
A new
approach to job distribution
April 24, 2002
Employers who contract with individual job distribution
tools or use the tools through their Application Service Providers
(ASPs), as well as those that manually enter data to distribute classifieds
to multiple Web sites, will be happy to know there is a new option
for job distribution. It's called job wrapping. It costs employers
nothing; it's targeted to precisely those job boards, associations
and other sites that employers want to approach; and after an initial
setup, it requires less time than traditional methods.
Applicant
Tracking, or Applicant Blocking? Is your ATS the weakest link in your
hiring process?
March 7, 2002
Applicant tracking systems (ATSs) have gained favor as
a solution for overwhelmed HR departments, who in a floundering economy
are receiving more resumes than they can manage. While ATSs may make
processing resumes easier, some authorities have noticed that because
ATSs often make the application process cumbersome for candidates,
they may tend to deliver job seekers who are "desperate" and weed
out more desirable, or passive candidates.

February 26, 2002
Frank Heasley, PhD, President and CEO of Medzilla.com,

were looking for jobs as pharmaceutical sales representatives.
